You rank on Google Maps — so why doesn't ChatGPT recommend you?

Your clinic shows up in the local pack. You've earned the reviews. So it comes as a shock when you ask ChatGPT for "the best clinic near me" and your name is nowhere in the answer. Here's why that happens — and why it isn't a mistake.

Search quietly split into two

For twenty years, "being findable" meant one thing: ranking on Google. That's still true for a large share of searches. But a growing number of people now skip the list of links entirely and ask an assistant — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, or Google's own AI answer — to simply tell them the best option nearby.

That's a different shelf. Doing well on the Google Maps shelf does not automatically place you on the AI shelf. They draw on overlapping signals, but they're built and measured differently — and a business can be strong on one and absent from the other.

Why the AI answer leaves you out

AI assistants don't rank a list — they compose a short answer naming a few businesses. To be one of those few, the model has to be confident about three things: that your business exists and is what you say it is, that it's relevant to the exact question, and that enough trustworthy sources agree. That confidence comes from a complete, consistent profile, clear answer-shaped content on your site, real reviews, and mentions across the web the model trusts.

If your details are thin or inconsistent, or your website doesn't plainly answer the question being asked, the model has little to go on — so it names someone it's more sure about. Proximity, which carries so much weight on the map, matters far less here.

The expat blind spot. Internationals overwhelmingly ask these questions in English. If your profile and content are Dutch-only, you may rank fine for Dutch patients and be completely invisible to the English-speaking ones — exactly the high-value group most clinics want.

The good news

The work that earns AI visibility is mostly the same work that strengthens your local presence anyway: an accurate, active Google Business Profile, consistent listings, reviews with substance, and a website that answers real questions. Get the foundation right, do it consistently, and you become a business the AI can confidently recommend — not just one it can find on a map.
